Rift in the Races (Book 2 of The Galactic Mage series) follows the continuing story of powerful Prosperion sorcerer Altin Meade and feisty Earth-fleet officer Orli Pewter in the fight against the mysterious alien Hostiles.
The Earth fleet is now moving to take advantage of its recent victory. With better combat strategies and Prosperion wizards only a blink away, the time has come to finish the job they set out to do destroying the Hostiles. But complications arise.
Altin’s discovery of space-traveling humans from distant Earth has threatened ancient and foundational beliefs for the people of his world. The shockwaves from this revelation begin to unravel a long-standing but precarious balance of power. With her eyes to the sky and all its galactic possibilities, Prosperion’s War Queen soon finds her realm on the brink of chaos.
Together, Altin and Orli must once again find a way to mediate the forces of pride, frustration and fear between their two peoples, or both planets will be destroyed. What ensues is an action-packed, laser-blasting magic ride through space, war, romance and conspiracy—a thrilling tale of alliances and alien hostility.
Sometimes “alien hostility” is a matter of perspective.

Really enjoy this series so far. Magic coexisting in the sci-fi world showing 'primative' is all a matter of perspective. No surprise that our star-crossed lovers don't have any easy go in this installment. I'm not even mad... Added a good bit to the story. We see less of our Mage friend this time too but we get more envolved with a lot of other characters so the storyline seems fuller to me.
We learn a lot more about the Hostile threat that rings a lot like plot line of Forever War, but come on, first encounter with a vastly different species of alien?!? We're going to shoot first... They may too.
Can't say I'm thrilled with the ending. I'm sure it will turn out ok and will still start the next book in the series soon to find out.
Started this thinking it was a trilogy, but now see the story continues on into book 5 or 6 now. Hoping it all stays fresh and doesn't jump the shark too soon

Rift in the Races The Galactic Mage Series Book 2 eBook John Daulton Reviews
This guy must have "like" (said in a snotty teenage voice) the grand master level unlocked on how to write frustrating novels. Good books if you like being perpetually tormented. He must sit there and go, "now this should keep the reader frustrated page after page." When I noticed I was half way through the first book I just kept thinking in a Ron Burgundy Voice "Well this doesn't escalate quickly"
Spoiler so stop reading...three quarters of the first book complete and you're like get to it already damn. And then we have the second book...I hate at the end of book two how he makes you go...yeah Asad is not so bad...cause even though he was a complete prick he was right...I just feel so used right now, almost dirty even. This must be how the donkey feels following the carrot.
I don't know, maybe after I digest this for a while I'll edit my review, but for now I'll stick with the teenage sarcastic tone here. There is some I liked but overall I'm just left with a complete and sincere sense of frustration. From the seemingly slow and painful plot and background story on the first book that took three quarter to get through before the inevitable meeting of our star crossed lovers. To the chaotic final scenes of returning to earth and the WTF about Altin question. And finally culminating with the realization (at least perceived) at the end of book two that Asad was correct all along is left lingering the way the stench a call girls sloppy last kiss on a busy night won't wash off even after three hours of scouring. That guy (Asad) was and prick and a bane through two complete books and you try to make me swallow that as a parting shot? We'll just have to see how book three turns out good sir.
I was so pleased to see the next book of space mage! I was so pleased it was 800+ pages!
But it goes all wrong. Terribly wrong. Like Daulton was channeling the darkside or imitating others who kill off your favorite characters. I had to skim whole chapters dedicated to character torture. And for all that, what? Most characters don't really develop but become more grotesquely cartoon-like.
I loved the lightheartedness of the first book. Though it did come with some horror. The space-madness from the first book was really terrible but always I had the feeling that it would end well; there would be redemption. With this book, there's no lightheartedness, and the terrible things happening almost feel like betrayal. I am still totally in denial about a certain character's death. I would like to believe that that is intentional misdirection from the author, that I'm supposed to disbelieve. But I doubt Daulton's kung fu is at that level.
I hope Daulton find's the soul of the first book before continuing this series, because I don't want to read another like Rift in the Races.
I enjoyed the overall plot of the book. It was also a pretty good length - there's a lot of prose here, and it's all well-written and has all the elements fans of the original book in this series know and presumably love. The cheesy romance, the amusing banter that results when characters that essentially come from entirely different epochs are stuffed into the same room. I really enjoyed the scenes where Earth's futuristic/corporatist ideals get mashed right up against the fanciful but somewhat brutish monarchistic society that our explorers are forced into working with.

The reason why I give the novel 4 stars is because of several different nitpicks that I feel detracted from the story. Firstly, I feel like Daulton spent too much time delving into uninteresting aspects of the Galactic Mage's culture - the black markets, the transportation systems, and so on. Especially when far more interesting aspects were ever-present who are the orcs? Who are the elves? Are they sentient beings, or just subhuman creatures? Why does one elf serve directly under the Queen with her full confidence while the rest are widely considered bloodthirsty tyrants? There was so much history that could've been explored, but wasn't.

The biggest nitpick of all is the half-baked way Daulton tried to explain Prosperion's magic. I had accepted by the second book that the magic just was - it was a gimmick that worked through mysterious means that would never be properly explained. That's totally fine by me! As long as the rules were self-consistent (and they were, more or less), magic didn't need to be explained. Daulton tried explaining it anyway, but honestly, when it comes to explaining the magic powers in any given universe, it's all or nothing. Going halfway just doesn't work - it breaks my suspension of disbelief and it makes a real mess of the plot.

Daulton didn't do that. Instead, he introduces the method by which all Prosperions do their magic. They have an organ in their brain, apparently, that allows them to tap into unseen energy and manipulate it. And that is about all the explanation Daulton gives. What really bugs me about this is that it introduces a whole new set of possibilities that the plot straight up ignores. So the Earth fleet has the technology to grow organs. Why can't they grow one in a vat? They can grow the main character a new hand - but the possibility of using DNA samples (samples which they do have, by the way) to grow a new mythalomous (or whatever it's actually called) totally escapes them. The scientists of Earth struggle to understand how their magic works - they know it's done with this organ...but nobody ever comes up with that idea? Really?
This made me question other aspects about the book as well. It really detracted from the story - I feel like it was a mistake to introduce Prosperion magic to the possibility of being understood without making any effort to actually explain it further. I hope it's more fully explained in book 3, or the possibility is entirely ignored. Otherwise, it's going to nag at me the whole time.

All of this still only takes off one star. The book was very good. I'm really excited to see what else happens with this story. I love mashing fantasy and futuristic elements together, and Daulton has done a wonderful job of doing it (with cheesy romance on the side) that I haven't found anywhere else. Well worth the read if you enjoyed the first book.
