AN INSPIRING MEMOIR BY A DETERMINED PERSEVERING DISABLED MAN
Steven Salmon, an author with severe Cerebral palsy, gives us a very personal in-depth look at his life in IT’S A NEW LIFE! MOM IS GONE. Raw, honest, and endearing, Steven writes movingly about the death of his mother, about the humiliations of ordinary life, his hopes and dreams, and his adjustment to living in a group home.
Steven is unable to use his hands and uses Morse code to write, tapping out letters using his head. With a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Writing from the University of Wisconsin—Stevens Point, and the author of five books, he often spends 10 to 12 hours a day writing 4 to 5 words a minute. Eight caregivers covering shifts 24/7 take care of Steven and his two housemates.
Steven’s life turned upside down the night his mother suddenly died after a brief illness. After caring for Steven all of her life, he has to become a man overnight. His mother dedicated and sacrificed everything to allow Steven to pursue his dream to become an author.
In this memoir, we see an aspiring author, grieving the loss of his mother while making big decisions for the first of his life. He is thrust into the world from his sheltered life. Steven hires a care agency to care for him, chooses a house to live in, adjusts to having care attendants taking care of his personal needs and living with two less than ideal roommates, and buries his mother.
Often he writes through the night when the writing is flowing. Sometimes he has to wake up the overnight care attendant when one of his roommate calls to use the bathroom and Steven wants to go to bed. Nothing stops Steven. He is on a mission.
Dreams are meant to happen, he keeps affirming. One of Steven’s ultimate dreams is to have relations with a woman. When he starts looking at houses to live in, Steven’s first question is, “Can I have women come over to have sex?” He is told yes, but later Steven learns from his case manager that his caregivers can’t call women or help him to get ready to have relations. It is considered “pimping,” and attendants are terminated for offering assistance. Steven fell into a deep depression after learning this fact since he is a forty-nine-year-old virgin. Steven says, “I have always wanted to be with a woman. I have read, written, dreamed, imagined, and wished to have sex. That’s my only desire now! I’m a man with a career, but I can’t have what I want the most. I feel I won’t experience sex. It makes me want to die.” Steven satisfies his desire by getting lap dances at a strip club.
One of Steven’s biggest dreams is to have his own apartment where he can have quiet to write. The problem is his social security is not enough to pay for rent and the cost of a care staff. “I need my own place to create in peace and do I want to do. It makes me upset that these rules restrict my freedom. I feel trapped by stupid rules!” Steven’s two roommates are an artistic twenty eight-year-old man and a wheelchair-bound man in his sixties. “My roommates are kind, but we don’t share anything in common. I work, have four bosses, have responsibilities, watch sports, and go out to drink. I feel alone,” Steven says. He continues to write despite these circumstances.
Steven wrote his memoir in 8 months while working on another manuscript for his literary agent. “Often I cried at the computer writing as I mourned the loss of my mother, but I kept moving forward with my writing,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without my friends and my agent,”
Steven’s mission in life is to show the world that the severely physically disabled can do anything if given a chance to succeed. “I’m trying to improve the lives of the disabled,” Steven says.

It a New Life! Mom is Gone eBook Steven Salmon Reviews

“It’s A New Day – Mom is Gone – A Memoir about Living Independently with Severe Cerebral Palsy” is Steven D. Salmon’s story. This is an amazing Story of the aspirations, determination, dedication, and diligence that have motivated Steven in his passion to become a recognized, successful, and accomplished author. Steven shares his story of overcoming challenges to write about the physically disabled. He serves as a voice and advocate for the many who do not have a voice that is being heard.

Steven’s mother dedicated her life to help him succeed. Steven has a Bachelor of Science degree in English with a writing minor from the University of Wisconsin- Stevens point and a Liberal Arts degree from Madison College. All these years his mother served as his primary care giver, so he could go on to pursue a writing career.

When his mother could no longer meet all of Steve’s physical needs, health attendants were hired to become a care team. Things dramatically changed the day his mother fell several times. Steven alerted the family with a call for help. When help arrived his Mom was taken to the Emergency Hospital, she never returned home. She died of a cardiac arrest.

The realization that “Mom is Gone” thrust Steven into a new stage in his story. He now had to face the challenge of living independently with severe cerebral palsy.

I found it hard to put Steven’s book down. There were other times when he was so gut wrenching honest it was hard to go on reading. I felt uncomfortable. As I continued to read Steven’s story, I begin to see life through a new set of eyes. I felt ashamed and embarrassed for living in an uncomfortable vacuum of hypocritical empathy, without recognizing the dignity or character of the individual in a wheel chair, quietly seeking acknowledgement, affirmation, or maybe even an act of friendship.
Steven has ignited a new flame and refueled my passion to write with the reminder to Believe in yourself, be patient, never give up. He encourages us to exchange our fears, failures, and impatience for hopes and dreams of success. This is the advice and encouragement he received from his friends, and now passes along to his readers.

I am left with an indelible picture of Steven at his computer, in four hour blocks of time, using his head to tap out his words using in a Morse code word choice program.

“It’s A New Day – Mom is Gone” is a gripping story of the severe physical limitations, the pain of loneliness, of feeling being lost, scared, and tired; all while in the pursuit of bringing an influential message of hope to a unique people who have been looked upon as unemployable, who are relegated to become wards of the state living in group houses, highly medicated, forgotten victims of the “system.”

A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.
So, you think your life is filled with challenges? Read this book and get back to me. Steven Salmon's book of life despite loss and limitations is as inspiring as it is real and raw. You'll never look at your own life the same way again.
Now the first chapter is little X-rated, but we all know people have needs. You're going to need lots of tissues, because the book isn't easy to read. The words from Steven's heart poured on the pages made it easy to see that the book wasn't easy to write either. After you've read it, go tell everyone!
This is an honest portrayal that takes you on a ride that will surprise you. Steve doesn't hold back. This is revealing material, sometimes raw but Steve tells it like it is and I admire him for that. Despite the despair experienced with cerebral palsy, Steve also has a great sense of humor. He also shows readers how to conjure hope when you need it. Steve reveals the reality of his days, too, and his struggles in finding work as a writer and editor. You learn about the technical hoops he's gone through in order to write when your arms and your speech ability won't cooperate. He also takes you along for a ride on his scooter in a few vignettes that are memorable. Such as the local exotic dancer club! I admired how much he shared. Real and well-written. Highly recommended for adult readers. Includes adult situations.
Brutally honest and very compelling!
